Ginny tensed, put her head back and held her breath. The pains had started while traveling in the wagon, but they were coming faster and harder. Tears made dirty paths down her cheeks. She knew there was a good chance the wolf could get in. The shutter that covered the window was old and bug ridden. It wouldn’t take long for that to succumb to the wolf’s abuse.
She kissed the top of Sarah’s head and the tears continued. Now you may never know about your real mother. We were going to tell you when you were older what a wonderful person she was. “I’m so sorry, Mary. I didn’t take very good care of your daughter.”
There was scratching at the shutter. “Don’t you worry, Sarah,” Ginny whispered. “You won’t feel one scratch or bite from that thing outside, nor will I.” She had heard those stories about being bitten by a wolf. At the time she laughed them off, but now, she wasn’t so sure. Even if they survived an attack Jesse’s words came flooding back—tie them up . . . go crazy . . . die.
That wasn’t going to happen. She would make sure of that herself. Her hand slipped into her pocket and caressed the gun that hid there. May God forgive me . . . and Jesse, too.
